Trailers require number plates to adhere to DVLA registrations. This plate should prominently feature the registration of the vehicle towing it. To meet legal requirements, your trailer’s number plate must conform to British Standards (BS AU 145e).

If your driving test was completed after 1 January 1997, you’re permitted to drive a car or van weighing up to 3,500kg in maximum authorised mass (MAM) while towing a trailer with a maximum MAM of 750kg.

Alternatively, you can tow a trailer exceeding 750kg MAM, provided the combined MAM of the trailer and towing vehicle doesn’t surpass 3,500kg. If you intend to tow anything heavier, it’s essential to pass the ‘Car and Trailer’ test.

When it comes to towing, it’s important to remember that your trailer must display the same number plate as the vehicle towing it. If you’re towing multiple trailers, each trailer must sport a securely affixed number plate at the rear.
